Naim chose CES to launch its long awaited entry into the USB DAC stakes. DAC-V1 is a converter and digital preamp with fixed and variable outputs that caters for the computer audio enthusiast. It’s Naim’s first asynchronous USB DAC but also has five S/PDIF inputs in coax and optical form, it also harbours a fully formed headphone amplifier. The actual converter is a BurrBrown 1791 that can run at up to 24-bits/384kHz which leaves plenty of headroom for real world bit rates, price will be £1250. The US distributor was demonstrating the Ovator S800 which were making their debut over there and had a suitably full scale system so I wasn’t able to hear the new DAC but will be making an effort to do so at the earliest opportunity.
Naim also launched the matching the NAP100 which is now the least expensive power amp in the range at £650. It’s rated at 50 watts per channel into eight ohms and doubles that into four ohms and looks very cute in its half width case.
