Just like the Alvo Aalto Stool 60 upon which it is sat, the Neat Petite is a triumph of modernist, pared back design and truly deserves it's iconic status. In this instance less is most definitely more and this clever two way communicates the musical message like few others.
The latest SX version is the ultimate iteration of Bob Surgeoner's original 1989 design as outlined below...
Neat’s first venture into loudspeaker design was the tiny Petite, which evolved over an 18-month period beginning in 1989. Bob felt that many small monitor-type speakers had great individual strengths but suffered compromises which invariably made long term listening somewhat frustrating. The objective for the Neat loudspeaker was to bypass these limitations and reveal the essential nature of the musical performance.
The Petite was the successful result of an empirical development process; listening to music and letting the music dictate the design of the speaker. The original intention had been to sell the speaker in small quantities from the Darlington shop, but interest shown by visitors led Bob to believe there might be a wider market for it. After a debut appearance at the 1990 Heathrow show in London, where it received a surprising amount of industry and public support, the Petite was officially launched and rapidly became a firm favourite amongst enthusiasts and the HiFi trade and press.
The Petite continues in production today, though the design has been revised periodically and is now in its fourth iteration, the Petite SX. Many other models have followed the Petite, and the same music-based principles are applied to all Neat products.
