The Harbeth Compact 7ES-3 XD is the first model from the company's new upgraded XD (Xtended Definition) range of loudspeakers, having taken the crossover upgrades devised for the company’s Anniversary series and applied them across the board.

Partnered with a splendid integrated amplifier such as the Sugden IA4, the results I achieved can only be described as the 'Best of British' - Vaughan-William's The Lark Ascending never sounded so intoxicating, Elgar's Pomp and Circumstance Marches more stirring.

With typical British reserve and true to their BBC heritage, the Harbeth's avoid drawing attention to themselves, their sole purpose in life to remain faithful to the music.

Harbeth owners are a loyal bunch, and tend to keep their speakers for years, if not decades. That speaks volumes about Harbeth and it's products.

A very welcome addition to our stable of iconic British Hi-Fi products.
Listen to this on Tidal:- Stemmelklang - Tomba Sonoratag:thetomtomclub.ning.com,2020-03-30:6506457:BlogPost:277252020-03-30T09:30:00.000ZTom Tom Audiohttps://thetomtomclub.ning.com/profile/0i13uhxydmlpw

Rega, for it is their patch, are growing in scale and technological advancement as I found when I visited recently. With the workforce up to 140 and a new healthy food canteen to keep them fuelled the company is doing remarkably well. When I last visited five years back the new mezzanine floor was only a quarter filled, now it’s full with cartridge, tonearm, turntable and electronics production teams. On the day of the visit the new Io integrated amp was in pre-production, Kai Gandy and Ashton Wagner supervising the building team and working out how to do things as efficiently as possible. When you make an amplifier with a phono stage for less than £400 in the UK you have to work smart. This is how Rega has managed to produce the £250 P1 turntable which they can build in two minutes.

Checking cantilever angle on the Aphelion 2 moving coil

In the cartridge department they have a different challenge with the new Aphelion 2 moving coil, this is hand built by people who have both the patience and skill to wind coils onto a tiny iron cross (top), tensioning the fine wire with a finger on a foam pad and feeding it onto each arm without snagging on the rotating cantilever. The Aphelion 2 is very similar to the Aphelion it replaces but has a totally different stylus profile at the end of its boron cantilever. MD Phil Freeman explained that while it’s called a fine line like the tip in an Apheta 3 this profile is unique to Rega. Compared to most styli it’s rotated by 90 degrees and only a fine ridge makes contact with the groove wall. The idea is to pick up the smallest undulations in the groove, the ones that contain the highest frequencies, and if the results I have been getting at home are any indication this makes a significant difference.

The most radical product that Rega introduced at the Bristol show is the Kyte loudspeaker (prototypes shown above), an entry level standmount with a cabinet made from phenolic resin that’s internally braced with ceramic dividers. Kai Gandy (son of Roy, below) is currently working on the moulding of the cabinet, getting the finish up to the requisite standard. Down in the speaker assembly area they have drivers awaiting installation so as soon as the boxes are ready Rega can gear up for production. It will be fascinating to see how these materials work out for a speaker cabinet, if they do what they did for Rega’s turntables (in the armbase to bearing braces) it could be very exciting.

Kai Gandy with Kyte case

Making the Naiad turntable is also a fine art but unlike other Rega products this design was never intended for mass production, it was a concept model for developing ideas and technologies that could be put into the regular turntables. According to MD Phil Freeman (above) the Naiad was never intended to be sold but as soon as people saw it they wanted it, so now a small team of craftsman build each Naiad up piece by piece, fettling and finessing as they go. Phil is a part of that team, which might explain why they take so long to make, an MD probably has a few more pressing jobs to deal with after all. In the lair that is R&D he showed me how the braces for the headshell have to be handcut and finished, and that’s only one small part of the job. It will be interesting to see which element of Naiad makes it into the next high end turntable to go into production, will it be the mu metal casing on the motor or the metal spike feet? Only time will tell.

Resurrecting our old, dog-eared A-Z from the glovebox (we've had it marked up by a local resident – most satnavs will direct you to the nearby airfield) we take a turning and find ourselves on the rural, unpretentious road named Gypsy Lane in Stroud, Gloucestershire, England.

We disturb the chickens as we switch off the engine – it's 10.30am and far too late for arrivals, after all. On a sunny day, when ATC engineers might fling open the doors to the prototype workshop (the one with a classic car chassis belonging to founder Billy Woodman hanging from the ceiling) these feathered residents pop in to make sure everyone's working hard enough.

They are though. ATC's reception leaves us in no doubt of this – the walls are chock-full of images of artists (Tom Petty, the Rolling Stones) and venues (Sony's SACD Studios in New York, Wigmore Hall, London, the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles) all of whom faithfully use its speakers. Make no mistake: this is proper high-end hi-fi.

We're here to witness the manufacture of our long-reigning reference speakers, the agile, transparent and dynamically honest ATC SCM50 speakers. And what better excuse to make the trip than during British Hi-Fi Week?

Our guide is technical sales manager Ben Lilly, an ATC veteran of 16 years. He laughs when we congratulate him on his tenure, though. You see, things are slightly different here. Here, a mere 16 years still makes him relatively green.

Ben reckons that since their 1985 introduction, around 3,500 pairs of SCM50s have been made to order – and demand for the 50s (and for their bigger SCM100 and SCM150 siblings) is only going up. All drive units in the three-way model are designed and built in-house, under this roof – a rarity indeed.

We begin with the hand-pressed and assembled voice coils. You simply can't buy the machine (pictured, above) that'll produce ribbon 6000th of an inch by 3000th of an inch out of fine copper wire: this unique 1974 contraption was made by Billy's brother. A dedicated engineer still feeds wire into it today. A lot of extra work, no? Reduced heat and greater efficiency within the coil's usable surface area is the name of the game here, and finessing the very roots of its drivers pays dividends.

These are tiny differences, but when it comes to performance they'll be amplified, quite literally. We mention this, and Ben smiles: "We don't make massive claims in terms of power, efficiency, frequency range or amplification. We always try to promise less and deliver more."

It's a statement backed up in numerous threads across various hi-fi forums. On seeing this laborious and time-consuming process – a process few have seen, let alone understand – we're fully onboard.

Vanessa Mayo, her nails shimmering as she works on a midrange mandrill and secures the coil with needlepoint precision, somehow manages to talk as she works. "I'm into my 35th year at ATC," she offers mildly, with all the humility of someone who actually only started last week. She glances over at her workload: "These have been in the oven and then rested overnight."

We mention that it doesn't look easy. She laughs. "There are no half measures here. Everything is tested and has to pass within its parameters at every step of the process" she says.

Ben suggests that 'Nessa might have completed at least 15,000 units by now. She laughs again, "Oh, and then some!"

We attempt to handle the ribbon 'Nessa's working with. It is so fine that our fingertips can barely feel it, even as we squeeze our thumb and forefinger together.

On into midrange dome and software assembly, which is Hugh Burston's domain. The delicate, highly-specific, fabric dome tweeter and midrange diaphragms (or 'reindeer noses' as the latter is affectionately known) are the only parts that ATC orders from a dedicated supplier – and the margin for error on hand assembling these is mind-bendingly small.

As Hugh demonstrates the various procedures within his remit, it becomes clear that one small error – if the two coats of protective polyester haven't been fully removed to expose the ribbon's metallic ends before soldering, if he lapses into a nanosecond of heavy-handedness with that fine glue nozzle – and a midrange driver can fail to make it to the next stage of assembly. And that would almost certainly mean starting again from scratch.

We remark that he must have an eye for detail. "Oh, I can tell who papered these coils as soon as I start work," he confirms. "Everyone has their own characteristic way of finishing them, little flairs in their work."

Hugh says he can complete 40 midrange drivers in an average week, "or 60 on a very good one". On his particular role, he adds, "I like that the whole process is mine. I test it before it leaves me – that's all on me."

Bass drivers in the SCM series vary greatly in size, but here Toby Keogh is at the helm, one of the very cornerstones of ATC's foundations. "After 43 years here, they've put my name on my T-shirt. It's so I don't forget it!" he says wryly. Toby tells us that he wanted a career change after working in a Scotland shipyard, so he "had lunch and an interview over a few pints with Billy (ATC's founder) in the pub in 1977. The rest is history."

Ben adds, "Any ATC speaker that comes in for service, anything at all – a custom install, a prototype, an anniversary edition we only made three of – Toby will know about it and almost certainly have worked on it. That level of hands-on expertise is irreplaceable."

We ask Toby if he still loves his work. Toby's smile is shy but his reply is quick and confident: "I've got two more years 'til retirement, but then I'll be stood outside, looking in through the window, watching them do it and probably wishing I still was. I mean, who else can say they did Live Aid?"

We ask him if much has changed here since he started. "We're a bit bigger," he answers, "But not much." Raising up a cautionary finger, he says, "You can't let the quality dip."

Ben agrees. "It's a conscious decision Billy had to make at some point in the '80s. Did he want to upscale and risk losing this level of workmanship, or did he stay here? He chose to keep things largely as they are."

We can only add humbly that we think Billy chose the right path.

We're about to see a weighty chunk of shiny black metal being magnetised. At ATC, it's like a scene straight out of the 1971 movie Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory. Apparently there is a newer magnetiser which is gradually being phased in, but we'll be seeing the original class of '74 machine.

Charlie, our suitably steampunk-styled engineer drops the inky disc into its waxy basin and pushes no fewer than nine buttons in sequence, all of which light up on command. Then, a buzz. We wait. It's intense, like the moment before Willy Wonka reveals the Everlasting Gobstopper.

Charlie retrieves the part from the magnetiser. He grabs a wrench. It practically leaps from his hand, attaching itself to the newborn magnet with a vice-like grip. We feel like breaking into applause. We feel much like a certain boy in Willy Wonka's factory (also named Charlie) did, on his wondrous factory tour.

Once the ATC SCM50 midrange driver is assembled, it goes into the quality control room. Here, its sonic performance is tested against a "golden" or reference driver. It must fit within certain parameters on the computer-generated graph to pass – and go into an ATC product.

As the driver is fitted dome-first into its big blue testing box, which holds the testing microphone, we realise it's the first time we've seen a computer since we've been here. We hear a surprisingly eardrum-awakening set of frequencies. Thankfully, the driver passes.

Since 2014, ATC has been making its tweeters in-house. The company took a long time to get the recipe right. "Oh, I'm very protective of my tweeters," Chloe Griffiths tells us, as she sets about assembling and testing one. She is the only member of staff in this tweeter room; the entire task is hers.

"I had my 19th birthday here. That was 11 years ago" she continues, spinning the tweeter on its workbench, applying an indescribably thin line of glue and adding "Oh, I bet I'm going to shake now!"

She never does. She's also able to make up to 140 of these per day, although she concedes that if you include testing (there's a mini version of the blue box tester next to her) it's probably more like 100.

We venture that we wouldn't trust ourselves to hold steady. Ben confirms this: "Here, there's little margin for physical error. A fraction of a gram of glue in a midrange driver might be of little consequence. Here, it could mean the whole thing fails."

In another room, circuitry boards comprising the three amplifiers found in the active version of the SCM50 are hand-cut, soldered and (after resting) meticulously tested on one of three machines that wouldn't look out of place in Doc Brown's garage in Back to the Future.

Here, all passes are noted and recorded by hand on well-thumbed ledgers.

ATC enclosures are built by a carpentry firm barely 20 miles away, in the neighbouring market town of Tewkesbury. Ben tells us they're delivered two or three times per week, depending on what's needed and in production.

We're in the slightly more spacious yet still modest final assembly room. In its centre, two pairs of SCM50s and a set of larger SCM150s are finished and awaiting dispatch. We're told that two pairs are headed to Hong Kong, one is off to the Unites States.

Along the far wall, several ATC SCM40A cabinets are being given a set of drivers.

In another corner, an engineer is hand-stretching and stapling the SCM50's fabric grilles. Clearly a seasoned upholsterer, he pauses to test one finished speaker for the last time. It is elevated, with the microphone roughly two feet in front of it. The frequencies are relayed and the results checked; a happy pass. He continues to add damping to the body of its future partner.

The best pot of tea we've had in some time is proffered, with a plate of top quality biscuits. It's Friday – there may even be wine later if we're interested? Sadly, the M4 motorway awaits.

On our way out, we happen upon today's time cards. ATC still works on a punch-in, punch-out analogue attendance system. And why change it? Companies boasting extensive online payrolls in far flung, glass-fronted, air-conditioned headquarters are coming all the way out here to seek ATC's expertise.

Considering everything we've seen today, it seems fitting.

Purchase a set of excellent ATC SCM50s and you can rest assured that Vanessa will almost certainly make the voice coil, Hugh will take care of the midrange driver, Toby will assemble the bass unit and Chloe will fashion the tweeter. These highly-skilled team members offer a combined experience of 92 years, all funneled into one product – and that's just for starters.

The familial feel at ATC is unique and wholly likeable, but we aren't fooled. Our visit is underpinned by the notion of something far stronger: assurance. ATC knows full-well what it's doing. And it does it very well indeed.
“Listen” – Take a Tour of the Rega Factorytag:thetomtomclub.ning.com,2020-03-12:6506457:BlogPost:280182020-03-12T14:00:00.000ZTom Tom Audiohttps://thetomtomclub.ning.com/profile/0i13uhxydmlpw

It may be a bit like groundhog day for the industry veterans but local enthusiasts have lost none of their enthusiasm. They were rewarded with a high standard of sound quality from many exhibitors and a slew of new products from some of the best brands.

Naim didn’t have anything brand new to show but Jason and Mark made some very enticing sounds with a high end system that comprised the ND 555 streamer with two 555 power supplies and a Uniti Core server front end, Statement NAC S1 and NAP S1 pre and monoblock amplifiers did the driving and Focal Scala Utopia Evo floorstanders delivered the goods. Naim must have been reading my reviews because on both the occasions I visited they were playing favourite acts, ZZ Top and Kurt Vile to be specific, and both sounded fabulous.

Rega made a splash with an all British vinyl replay system for £999. They have achieved this by creating two new products in which value seems unusually high. The Io name was last seen on a high end Rega phono stage, now it’s been taken by a 30W integrated amp with phono stage and headphone output, it’s joined by a new Kyte speaker but this one is very different from its predecessor. Eschewing the traditional wooden box in favour of a phenolic cabinet it has ceramic internal bracing and a rear port behind the tweeter and woofer. Combined with a P1 turntable to finish off the System One modelled by Simon above sounded very entertaining indeed.

Rega has not forgotten those who are more serious about their records, there is now a facelifted version of the Aria phono stage to match the rest of its electronics and a new fine line stylus on the now yellow Aphelion 2 moving coil cartridge.

Bob Surgeoner of Neat Acoustics continues to expand his iso-baric range of loudspeakers with the Ministra. This bookshelf model is derived from the Ekstra introduced last year and has a second driver behind the one you see to reinforce the bass, high frequencies are provided by a ribbon tweeter. Both drivers are mounted on a polyethylene membrane designed to minimise colouration.

Derek Gilligan at Kudos was using an active Naim system with a difference to drive his Titan 707 floorstanders. By combining a SNAXO/Hi Cap with a SuperNait 3 to drive the bass and a NAP 250 DR on the treble he was getting some great results out of a system that didn’t take up half the room and doesn’t cost an arm and a leg (just an arm!).

Harbeth’s Allan Shaw was on hand to explain that he has taken the crossover upgrades devised for the company’s Anniversary series and applied them across the board. The new models get an XD suffix for Xtended Definition, Allan can be seen modelling the HL C7ES-3 XD, jumper model’s own.

Naim are expanding their brand’s merchandise range with a collection of T-shirts, bags and prints, I’m not sure if they will make your NAP 250 sound like a Statement NAP S1 but it can’t hurt. The range will be available to buy on the Tom Tom Audio on-line shop soon.ATC were making some remarkable sounds with their SCM7 standmount speakers, CD2 CD player/DAC and SIA2-100 integrated amplifier, so much so that I had to ask whether the new C2 Sub MkII subwoofer (below) was being used, apparently not. They also brought along a pair of active SCM40A's and a Vertere SG-1 turntable for good measure, Ben Lilly and Dave Speirs were obviously having far too much fun.

Chord Co have finalised their ChordOhmic Transmission Fluid, this is a two stage contact cleaner that is claimed to provide long lasting benefits to any and all the connections in an audio system. They showed this to the press last year and have spent the intervening time working out how best to use it (by allowing it to dry for an hour before use) and giving the fluid a longer shelf life. Chord have also started using their XLPE insulation on the most affordable speaker cable in the range, demonstrating Leyline X’s benefits over the previous incarnation with ease.

Chord have also started making Burndy cables for use with Naim components, maybe this will prompt a Super Lumina Burndy down in Salisbury!

English Electric is a brand from the glory days of British engineering and was once found on trains and jet aircraft, today it is being used by Chord Co for its first electronics product. This is a network switch that has been built from the ground up to remove the noise introduced by the computer peripheral switches found in many streaming systems. Chord demonstrated it with a scratchy version of Boy in the Bubble by Patti Smith, replacing a regular Netgear switch with the English Electric produced a significant improvement in coherence and timing that was not hard to hear. Delivery is expected soon.

I found Roy Gandy in the quieter of the two Rega rooms and he took the time to explain why streaming audio could never be as good as even CD let alone vinyl, so it looks like the never even hinted at Rega streamer is still a long way off! Roy is in green (no surprises there) with CEO Phil Freeman to his left and Italian blogger Ricardo Robecchi on his right. On our right is Rega’s electronic design engineer Ashton Wagner who created the Atlas tracking gauge and new Kyte speakers.

Earlier in the week I went to hear the latest additions to Naim’s range of integrated amplifiers. Both the Nait XS and Supernait are now in their third generation, but you’d have to be eagle eyed to spot the difference which comes down to the addition of a ‘phono’ input button on the front panel. This of course indicates the arrival of a phono stage onboard the Nait XS3 and Supernait 3, something which Naim have not included in the past but now that the vinyl revival is so strong the demand for this feature can’t be ignored.

Steve Sells

This is an MM only stage, MC users will have to add an external Stageline or Superline for which these amps have a powered connection. The biggest change to the main amplifier is an interesting one, the second generation models used a cascode output stage where a small signal transistor was protected by a relatively robust device. Now these have been replaced with a single transistor which has marginally increased harmonic distortion in exchange for a doubling of speed. In the opinion of Steve Sells (above) and his team in R&D at Naim we can accommodate harmonic distortions much more easily than timing errors. This new output configuration makes both amplifiers sound more powerful although there is no change in specified output.

NDX 2 above the new Nait XS3

Listening to both via a pair of Focal Sopra No.1 standmounts and using an NDX 2 streamer as a source the Nait XS3 sounded considerably more substantial in the bass than its predecessor, it also had a more open presentation and better timing. When we went over the Supernait 2 I was surprised at how close the XS3 was, the change to Supernait 3 was more subtle but equally significant. The biggest Naim integrated now has a more muscular bottom end that is as taut and pacy as ever, it’s also stronger in terms of depth resolution and times far better than any integrated has a right to. We played some vinyl through the Supernait 3 with an LP12 Magic running an Adikt cartridge, this brought out the depth and subtlety of the format and revealed that MMs can be rather more sophisticated than I realised.

Streaming is not only an easier way to enjoy your music collection it is also a remarkably easy way to improve the sound quality of a CD collection. A good quality server such as Naim’s Uniti Core will make any disc you rip to it sound better than the majority of CD players, it seems crazy but eliminating the process of reading the disc with a laser has a significant impact on sound quality.

For reliability as much as sound quality reasons a wired rather than wireless approach to networking a streamer to both the internet and a server is recommended. This is not always easy of course and many complain that it’s just not possible, by which they mean difficult to achieve. But according to networking guru Phil Harris “there is always a way if you have the will and a Hilti drill”, which sounds a bit extreme but sometimes making a hole in the wall is the easiest way. He is not keen on ethernet over the mains because it pollutes the power that your system depends on and thus undermines potential sound quality, it can even destabilise amplifiers and upset phono stages in some situations. The obvious alternative, wireless networking, suffers from reliability issues and is likely to be compromised by the quality of the routers provided by ISPs. If you can’t avoid wi-fi a third party router wired to the main modem/router for the incoming signal is the best route, just remember to turn off the wi-fi on the other unit for best results.

Standard network set-up
Below is a diagram of the connections that need to be made in order to create a basic streaming set up. The router connects to a network switch and the streamer and server/hard drive attach to the same switch. You need the connection to the router in order to control the system over wi-fi using an app on your tablet or phone, and if you stream internet radio or one of the streaming services such as Qobuz or Tidal then this has to get to the streamer.

In a wireless system you connect the server/hard drive to the router, either via a network switch or directly, and the streamer can access both internet and local music files/streams over the wi-fi.

It’s necessary to include your PC on this network in order to be able to transfer and download music files to the server/hard drive, but unless you are creating an audio specific network this is likely to be the case. If you do make a network for the system then it will be necessary to give the PC access either via ethernet or wirelessly, again wires are useful here as it speeds up file transfer significantly.

A dedicated network
While the basic network set up should be reliable it can be improved from a sound quality point of view with some relatively inexpensive upgrades. The Achilles heel of digital audio is noise, not directly audible noise but high frequency noise within the electronics that raises the noise floor of the signal and masks fine detail. This noise comes from various places and one of them is the switched mode power supplies used on all manner of domestic electronics, not least computers and peripherals. The first step to combatting this is to provide a degree of isolation from noise on the main network by using a second router, this usually has to be wired to the main router but thereafter the system is much like the standard set up.

Network switches are also problematic because most have noisy switching power supplies. There are a few older switches originally built for professional installations that have decent power supplies, check the Naim forum for the most desirable pre-loved buys. Alternatively a few companies make linear power supplies for network switches and these have a beneficial effect on sound quality.

Inconveniently and much to the horror of the bits is bits brigade ethernet cable also affects sound quality, particularly in our experience the link between the server/hard drive and the switch, and the link to the streamer.

I use the terms server and hard drive to indicate that the former are dedicated music storage devices and the latter rather more affordable NAS drives (network attached storage). The reason why Naim and others have created dedicated music servers such as the Unitiserve and now Uniti Core is because this part of a streaming system is essentially the source, and as you will remember source is king. When you have a serious streamer/DAC such as any of the Naim ND models you will notice big differences between decent server and a NAS drive. This is because audio servers are designed from the ground up as low noise, high resolution storage systems that deliver music files with significantly less noise for the streamer to unpack and turn into a digital signal that is then converted to analogue. Less noise in equals more music out.

There are so many products of all shapes and sizes that you quickly get snow blind and only see the most extreme examples. It is not a place to try and assess a manufacturer’s ability to build an entertaining audio system unless your own listening space is made of glass and full of people, of course if you have a lot of parties then maybe it is. A few of the more practised exhibitors create a calm environment in which to demonstrate their wares and then have the unenviable challenge of finding music to play that sounds good but isn’t well worn hi-fi staple (a hurdle that few manage to cross). But there is a lot of bling to enjoy and some good sounds can be heard if you are lucky.

Muso 2 is based on the Uniti streaming engine complete with multiroom, Airplay 2 and Chromecast features, it has HDMI input and can now be voice controlled with third party devices. A lot of work has gone into improving sound quality, the processor is 13x more powerful, it can cope with bit rates up to 32/384 natively and the volume control is software driven so that it optimises the balance to suit the playback level. Which means that it adjusts tonal balance so that the six power amps don’t run out of steam when the volume is pushed hard. Focal has had input into the speakers which are heavily revised but remain actively driven and both power supplies and amplifiers have been upgraded.

It’s very nice in shiny black and clear acrylic with colour coded lighting to indicate speed, it comes with a very unusual tonearm that uses nylon threads where others have bearings. This provides a very low friction bearing with no stiction, there is no initial resistance to movement as there is with most bearings, and given that a cartridge is constantly changing direction that has to be a good thing. The arm is one piece from headshell to counterweight and made of an aluminium and polymer sandwich. The platter is machined aluminium with a bonded mat and multi material damping on the underside. Clearly a lot of thought has gone into what Touraj is calling a ‘plug and play’ turntable that’s available with or without cartridge and should be on sale in June. He played a few tracks through Kudos Titan 505 speakers and I have to say it was one of the most musical sounds heard at the show.

Three new models will be coming in the summer and I have had the opportunity to get a good idea of what engineers Roy George and Steve Sells (below) have been doing to improve the range and the opportunity to hear them in Naim’s Salisbury HQ listening room.

The new models consist of the ND5 XS 2, the only model without an onboard display, the NDX 2 (below) which has onboard power supply but can be upgraded with an XPS or PS555 and the range topping ND 555, the first new product to hit the 500 series in 12 years.

The fundamental change that all three models incorporate is a new streaming engine offering access to streaming services from Spotify and Tidal, wireless connection for Airplay, Bluetooth (aptX) and Chromecast and readiness for Roon operation. With full app control via the Naim App and remote handsets provided for the two larger models, an aluminium clad one in the case of the ND 555 these three are designed for multifunctional ease of use as well as top notch sound. In their quest to make better streamers than the previous range Roy and Steve have been going through the whole circuit from input to output with their fine tooth combs and building new power supplies, DAC and analogue circuitry for each model. BurrBrown DAC chips are employed but purely as converters with all other functions handled discretely, while the clocking removes the separation of clocks for streaming and conversion by running both functions from the one source, always a good move.

The ND 555 (above) gets the lion’s share of the upgrades with only the mass loaded, spring isolation system coming over from the NDS. This is the first source product to incorporate DR regulators which are placed beneath the DAC circuit to minimise distance and the potential for noise in one fell swoop. Roy George talked about cable placement and tying methods, not to mention the fact that he compared the sound of different torque settings for the bolts that hold the lid on the streaming engine case. There’s attention to detail and there’s OCD, but you don’t get consistently great sounding products without the latter.

Steve Sells explained that all the connections inside these streamers are balanced, again to minimise noise, and the same goes for conversion and filtering. The ND 555 uses two BurrBrown DAC chips to create a balanced output for this purpose, he says that they’re getting 130dB dynamic range out of these DACs, a pretty phenomenal figure even by digital standards. A SHARC DSP chip provides 16x integer oversampling and the converters are good for up to 32/384 or DSD128. Inputs include optical, coaxial (BNC and RCA) and Ethernet with dual Wi-Fi antennas for a solid wireless connection. Roy is currently working on multi-room operation across the ND, Uniti and Muso ranges which will make Naim one of the very few who can offer such a breadth of streamers with this functionality.

I also got the opportunity to listen to these three streamers in the cosy environs of the highly damped Naim listening room with its appropriately green leather sofas, here Jason Gould played a couple of his alt country favourites (Ryan Adams and Lyle Lovett) with each ND through 500 series amplification and a pair of Focal Utopia Scala V2 floorstanders. A slightly OTT system for the ND5 XS 2 but it proved more than up to the task with a nicely timed, clean and open sound that had my foot tapping from the off. Moving up to the NDX 2 saw a substantial leap in detail resolution, harmonics became clearer and the bass instruments better defined, things were getting very good indeed.

But the best was naturally kept till last, the ND 555 is a killer streamer with phenomenal transparency and, equally important, a powerful sense of coherence that makes everything you hear on it immediate and essential. It brings out the depth of the soundstage and separates everything out so that you can hear right into the mix, it really is quite a thrill to hear so much from a technology that Naim has managed to get so much out of. I only wish I could have had more time with it, but a sample has been requested as soon as they are in production and I will be looking forward to discovering what’s hidden in my music collection, expectations are very high.
Bristol Sound & Vision 2018tag:thetomtomclub.ning.com,2018-02-28:6506457:BlogPost:229202018-02-28T13:00:00.000ZJasonhttps://thetomtomclub.ning.com/profile/Jason

If you’re lucky you might discover some decent new music as well, the best music I heard this year was an album I already know but quite a new one in the form of Nils Frahm’s All Melody, which was present in both streamed and vinyl forms.

Naim took the opportunity to demonstrate a more accessible system without Statement, concentrating on Classic line products to the apparent exclusion of all else. The speakers were sparkly blue examples of the substantial but not overwhelming Focal Scala Utopia Evo driven by a NAP500 and the result was captivating. I spotted a large banner showing the parts of a component which turned out to be the as yet unlaunched replacement for the NDS streamer dubbed ND 555, a few of the shinier pieces from which were on a plinth nearby. There was also an NDX 2 on static display with clues as to how this will differ from the current NDX, most of which indicate that Naim has incorporated the streaming engine, five inch display and feature set from the Uniti range into these two streamers. As the press launch has been set for end of March I imagine that this range topping source will be available in early April at the latest.

This incorporates the isobaric bass loading and constrained layer cabinet construction seen in the floorstanding Titans but designer Derek Gilligan has had to come up with a cunning port arrangement that’s machined into the base of the speaker. All you can see is the vent at the front but the internal channelling is quite unusual. Kudos were using a Naim UnitiNova streamer/amp and making a very appealing sound.

Chord Company launched its ChordOhmic speaker cable plugs at Bristol. These were developed as a result of the benefits accrued by silver plated connectors on Chord’s SarumT and ChordMusic cables and are being made available beyond the company’s own range of speaker cables. Chord chose to demonstrate an as yet unreleased contact enhancing process that they are calling Transmission Fluid, this consists of a cleaner and an enhancer that if the single cable dem was anything to go by could reap spectacular results if applied system wide.

Despite being based nearby in Stroud this was the first time that ATC had taken a room at the Bristol show. They took the opportunity to highlight the new CDA2 Mk2 CD player/DAC/preamplifier and hooked it up with a pair of SCM40A active floorstanders. With nearly 250 Watts across three drivers in each channel this powerhouse would have gone a lot louder but the Marriot’s rooms aren’t the sweetest so they were taking things fairly easy and making a great sound.

Focal had a room in the basement where they were concentrating on the new Kanta No2 which was making some appealingly relaxed sounds on the end of a Naim UnitiNova streamer/amp. This floorstander combines flax mid and bass drivers with a beryllium tweeter in a stylish modern cabinet that’s available in some pretty lively colourways, but fear not it can also be had in black.

This eliminates the extra cost, box and cables of a separate phono stage and means that you can spin vinyl through any amplifier. They also showed this years RSD (record store day) model, a combination of a shiny P2 plinth with a new white melamine platter and the hardware (arm, motor, cartridge etc) from a P1. This will be limited to 500 units some of which will be signed by well known musical artistes and goes on sale on April 21st.

The Iota Xplorer is a pretty serious proposition with an Air Motion Transformer (AMT) planar tweeter and Neat P1/R3 midrange on view and a pair of bass drivers arranged isobaric style firing downwards in their own sub-enclosure. Standing 74cm high they sounded rather good as Neats have a tendency to do.

Not satisfied with building several updated versions of DJ favourite the SL-1200 they have recreated the original range topping SP-10R, the suffix indicating that this isn’t the same as it’s seventies predecessor. This is an uncompromised direct drive design with a brass platter and outboard power supply that’s being sold as motor unit and power supply so that enthusiasts can build their own plinths and use any arm. Those after an easier life can get the SL-1000R which has the above elements in a plinth with arm and the option to run up to two extra arms. With prices at £8,000 (SP-10R) and £14,000 (SL-1000R) they are clearly on a mission to regain their old crown although whether this will wash with those of us familiar with great turntables remains to be seen.
Free Speech & Fine Speakers...
