Hi Chaps,
Back from an unfortunate stay in hospital that comes with age unlike wine that gets better! and Naim gear too!
During my stay I asked my other half (she loves Naim/Linn too) for some magazines to delay the boredom of 10 days confinement. I had some great mags about collectors cars, when did the Allegro become a collectors car or you had to have zillions to afford the most rarest Ferrari for re-build.
In the mix of magazines were some hi-fi titles full marks to sourcing them amd there is where it stops!
A monthly called " Hi Fi News" year book reviewed the Guru speakers... great but what about the rest of it.
Naim reviews were great and well deserved from amp to dac to intergrated CD and whatever.
But the the thing that really struck me was the music reviews!
There was a review of the re-release of the Bowie album Alladin Sane one of my all time favourites... a huge paragraph on why it sounded the way it did etc. I came home from hospital and guess what the old system was revved up all day during convalescence and guess what,,, what did they listen to this album on.
I re-read the magazine and it scared me ... the cost of stuff other than Naim that they are playing with.
I am really gald that I discovered the true path to enjoyment of music a long time ago when the accusation was that unless you swallowed the Naim/Linn philsospy that you were deluded.. guess what they were..pure engineering makes a massive difference, quality over fashion!
Umpteen years later degrades in age related hearing etc... naim stand true to the fact that it is about the music not the latest fad or how fact your wallet is.
I am on the road to recovery now and I hope like of all you we are in this for the pure enjoyment of music... what else is there.
I truly miss the times when Julian or Ivor would be so steadfast to a belief that brought a change so fundamental to music reproduction. Even Jimmy Hughes starting messing around with American gear and panel speakers... after being a big Naim fan and telling readers that you should sit at least a foot above an Isobarik to really appreciate the sound. Where is Peter Belt and his sellotape for the rim of of the platter of an LP12.
With much affection
